Papaw

Working, working, working...

My Papaw/Papaya Poem:

I am unsure about whether the papaw is seasonal

Like other fruits in the Caribbean such as the mango, jamoon, and awara

In other words, it is not clear to me whether the trees produce a lot of the fruit at a certain time of the year

It does not appear to be so

For I believe the papaw is available all year round.

The papaw is used when it is young and also when it is mature or ripe

The young or green papaw is used by Caribbean households in a special way

The ripe papaw is orange on the inside and eaten with or without the skin

Sometimes, it is used for making a smooth fruit concoction made with milk

The seeds are healthy too

They look like dark hair on the papaw.

I have had quite a few over the last few weeks in Linden, Guyana

When walking through the neighborhood in Linden, I noticed at least one tree with lots of green fruit.
