Underrated Skill

The ability to write clearly is the most underrated skill all successful people have, according to Dr. Juliette Han in her January 2023 CNBC article https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/25/harvard-neuroscientist-shares-the-underrated-skill-successful-people-have-especially-introverts.html. The article argues that a person who writes well (is thoughtful and strategic) will also be successful at other things such as public speaking and small talk.

The article provides writing tips/advice. I liked the tip to reduce the work for the reader. One way to do this is to provide information such as why you are writing at the very beginning. Another is to organize the writing for easy reading or even skimming. This all makes me think of usability.

Success Research

Always good to find research that is similar to mine. This research by a Stanford professor investigated determinants/keys of success by identifying common traits in successful people:

My research looked at successful people who are “different.” They are from a different culture or behave/think differently. Hopefully it will be published soon.

Elevator Pitch

You may have heard that I was stranded in New York a few years ago (see posts on my
experience at this link: https://fahmeenaodetta.blogspot.com/search/label/strandedinnewyork). At first, I was horrified because I had lost important items and could not retrieve them. Afterwards, I calmed down and started thinking about strategies to retrieve my important items.

After a while, I started enjoying New York. I enjoyed Bryant Park. I enjoyed walking around Times Square. I found quite a few tea shops and went in to look at their offerings. I even pitched my pickled meat business idea at a bank. I wasn't totally prepared but I did a good job.

It is important to sell your ideas and even "sell yourself" especially when seeking a job. In the past, I practiced an elevator pitch in case I needed to pitch an idea (here is an article on perfecting your elevator pitch: https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/4034-elevator-pitch-tips.html).

This reminds me of my 7 Ps of success. One of the Ps is for Persuasion.

Happiness

I've heard my father say time and time again that happiness comes from helping others.  "If I make somebody else happy, I am happy" he would say.
Wise men have been saying the same thing for centuries. For example:
Nobel Peace Prize receipient Muhammad Yunus stated that, "Making money is a happiness; making other people happy is a superhappiness."
Saint Francis of Assisi stated, "For it is in giving that we receive," and
Martin Luther King Jr. stated, ""...the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others."

It turns out that research also supports this assertion. The articles 'Happiness Comes From Making Others Feel Good Rather Than Ourselves, According To A New Study' (Time Magazine Online, https://www.forbes.com/sites/traversmark/2021/04/26/happiness-comes-from-making-others-feel-good-rather-than-ourselves-according-to-a-new-study/?sh=25fab73c2fd9)
and 'If You Want to Be Happy, Try to Make Someone Else Happy' (Greater Good Magazine, Berkeley, University of California, https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/if_you_want_to_be_happy_try_to_make_someone_else_happy) discuss research that show that people derive more happiness from helping others. Researchers Liudmila Titova and Kennon Sheldon compared the strategy of pursuing happiness for oneself with the strategy of pursuing happiness for others. They found that the second brings more personal happiness than the first. Another study led by researcher Milla Titova found that making others happy made participants happier than socializing or making themselves happy. Not only financial generosity can increase one's happiness (spending money on others increases one’s happiness more than spending money on oneself), but also donating time to help someone in need or striving to put the happiness of others above our own.

In my research on achievement and success (which should lead to happiness), I discovered that these seven traits and talents lead to success: perception, preparation/planning, problem-solving, persuasion, patience, perseverance, and panache. Perseverance may be the most important. In life, people have setbacks, they struggle, they fail. They need to persevere to break free from struggles and recover from setbacks and failures. Patience is usually required.
Persuasion is needed to sell ideas, to convince others of something, for making others see things as you do, or for garnering support. Persuasion is known as a great superpower.
Perception deals with seeing things clearly, and also viewpoints, ideas, thinking, and vision.
Preparation/Planning is needed to formulate a strategy, to think through issues.
Problem-solving is needed to deal with all the problems that may crop up. Creative solutions to problems is a plus.
Panache has to do with confidence, style, charisma, and character.

(End note: The 7Ps for success remind me of the 7Cs of driving - a topic my father always likes to discuss.)

Habits And Success

Today I decided to write a short article on LinkedIn. I could have added it to this blog but decided a LinkedIn article would be better.

The article is on habits and success. It is related to the research I conducted on achievement and success (my Lessons Project) and also a signature assignment I prepared on Electronic Monitoring and Performance.

Life Lessons

I have been researching/testing my determinants of success (my 7Ps) on LinkedIn. I benefited from some posts and comments.

I developed the 7Ps from my Life Lessons project. It was after analysis of quotes, proverbs, graduation stories, and so on on achievement and success. I created analysis groups/categories - which I shared on social media (on Facebook, Twitter, GooglePlus, and so on). I called the categories themes and there was a different theme each week.

I started the project in Facebook many years ago. I wasn't thinking of a high school project/book that I had when I started it, but I realize the projects are pretty much identical. In high school, I collected quotes, stories, and so on in a green folder book. I recall that I wanted the lyrics of the song Desiderata in the book so I spent some time capturing the lyrics of the song. There was also a Mistaken Identity story.

Desiderata was the number one song in my first top songs list created for the Lessons Project.
I guess a lot of things in my life started in Guyana, South America.

DID YOU KNOW?
The main work under my Lessons Project was to categorize/group lessons (words of wisdom, words of advice, graduation speeches, parables etc.) to look for inter-relationships, conflicts, and so on so that I can come up with core drivers of personal success. The result was my 7Ps for Success. I also decided to focus on struggle stories and also decided that learning from failure is important for success.

I posted lessons under those categories on all social media pages of the Lessons Project (at least 3 accounts). I no longer post lessons at this time.

I applied lessons from the project to my life - to my weight loss in the past and to a jobs search in the past (http://moorefo1.blogspot.com/). The project has also helped me find peace with events in my past.
