Continuing my thought on the Personal Benefits of Plant Care, the available substitutes for living houseplants look just as good in the home but they do not require watering or other care. I had some of those substitutes too. They are made from plasticy materials but look quite real. The convenience (of not watering the plant or "taking care" of the plant in other ways) comes at a price. There will be no learning of patience or obtaining the other benefits associated with plant care.
I know that convenience is important. Some people have regular houseplants but come up with creative ways to take care of them (that are more convenient).
One of my papers I submitted for publishing included details on convenience as a motivating factor. Shoppers were motivated to use new technology (such as an app) because the new technology made shopping more convenient.
