God is working in my life

 Is God working in my life? Sometimes I am not sure. There are times I can only say things turned out well because of God. Take the papers I worked on when away from school contemplating my future. I cannot believe ambidexterity fits so well. I was able to report cases of ambidexterity not yet known in academia (see screenshot). The marketing paper is another example. The paper came together after careful thinking about my experience (a special assignment) at a previous employer. I was assigned to the Testing/Quality Assurance department with a "special" assignment/task to improve the quality of requirements prepared elsewhere (Testing does not prepare requirements).

Papers

 Just yesterday, I was thinking of the number of papers I wrote for school (my PhD program). I wrote one paper a week for each 8-week course. I completed about 9 courses which adds up to 72 papers. Most of the papers were short 6-7 page papers but they required quite a bit of research so there was much work involved. I got used to the grind each week and even enjoyed preparing some assignments. That was a good time.

PhD Statistics

I did well at statistics at Northcentral University (during my PhD). I prepared some of the papers in Florida and some in Maryland while on vacation. I recall working on papers for one of the statistics courses at the Starbucks close to a popular mall in Maryland. I stayed there all day working on assignments. I recall that I needed to use SPSS for the course. I believe I signed up for the student version from IBM.

A section/excerpt from one of the papers (that deals with the normal distribution - I first learned of the normal distribution during A-levels and then covered at UG):

Database courses

I am reminded of database courses I completed at NCU. I learned a lot.
I learned about data mining, OLAP, knowledge management, and data protection/loss.

For the database administration and management course, MIS 7002, I needed to prepare a signature assignment. It required me to prepare a 12-page organizational intelligence policy. I was proud of this assignment.

There was a paper on the knowledge and skills needed for specific database positions (by different database professionals or people who work with databases). I need to think about these issues for my situation.

One of the papers I prepared during the course was similar to a document I prepared on an audit project at Grant Thornton. I pulled together the federal and state regulations/rules, standards, and policies that pertain to data protection.

There was a presentation on data mining (https://youtu.be/H4crCeJegGY). I recall that I used my background to select data mining examples. Under-the-hood information on this assignment (in the course blog) reminded me that I prepared it in the computer lab for residents of my Gainesville apartment community (http://fmooredbadminmngtsiga.blogspot.com/2016/10/assignment-submitted.html). Posts and pictures in the blog bring back a lot of memories. I recall the cover photo / header picture that I designed for my social media accounts. My photos of a small cathedral-like church in Gainesville are shown. I stopped taking food to the lab.

I prepared a presentation on an example of failed decision-making at Amazon.

Paper Submitted For Publishing

Today, I submitted a paper to a journal for publishing. I was happy to start submitting papers for publishing again. It has been a few weeks!

The paper I submitted today was inspired by a paper I prepared for one of my PhD classes. It is very similar to my PhD paper but includes new articles that fall under a different topic as well as changes/additions to make the paper more 'publishable' (or worthy of publication). I worked on the paper for quite a while.

I had trouble deciding which journal to submit to. The paper analyzes the results of a number of journal articles and also looks at issues/challenges related to the research method and design of the articles. The topic is technology-related and also retail-related so journals in those fields were options. The paper includes tips for novice researchers who may need to conduct similar research so a journal on research methods was also an option. I settled on a journal on qualitative methods. I await the decision of the editor of the journal.

And, of course, I will continue my work on preparing papers for publishing.

Recommendation Systems

I first learned of recommendation systems during my first literature review course at NCU. The topic was online reviews and recommender systems were one type of system connected with online reviews. I included some information in my paper on these systems that made recommendations to users. I thought they added a lot of value (were very helpful and useful to the consumer). Today, I learned of recommendation systems for music. I found several papers on systems that use different approaches to recommend music to users. How interesting! I would like to personally test these systems.

Progress With Paper

I am still working on my paper on electronic hand hygiene compliance monitoring for publishing. I am finding a lot of recent research on the topic, i.e. research published since I completed my signature assignment (the assignment is available here: https://w.taskstream.com/ts/moore783/SignatureAssignmentProposalMonitoring.html/acf5e6eq00akfcfkf7e8edfefl). I decided to add some of the recent research to the paper. I also sent a draft to the professor who graded the signature assignment for review.

I am trying not to exert myself too much. Just recently, I was dealing with some serious health issues. A few days ago, my mother sent me this photo to remind me of my journey:

Lots Of Work

Yesterday, I received emails from two journals. One of the journals asked for more revisions to the manuscript. The other told me that my paper is "not sufficiently developed to proceed to the next step" and I should "continue to refine my work." Both of the journals provided really good feedback/information. I actually received ideas on analysis/details I should include in the paper. I appreciate the comments on how to make the papers better. Now, I have a lot of work to do.

Affected papers:

  • Paper on technology solutions for hand hygiene compliance
  • Literature review paper on online reviews

Update Nov28

I submitted another paper for publishing. I called it "A Critical Analysis of Three Papers On Responding To Online Reviews." I submitted it to Cornell Hospitality Quarterly. Years ago, when I was working on the paper, I actually requested one of the three articles reviewed from Cornell University through the NCU (ncu.edu) library because it could not be opened/viewed from the NCU library - see related post https://fahmeenaodetta.blogspot.com/2022/07/responses.html).

If you are interested in my posts on online reviews, visit https://fahmeenaodetta.blogspot.com/search/label/onlinereviews.

I am in pain again.

Update Nov2

Today, I received two emails on my articles/manuscripts submitted for publishing. One journal asked me to remove information identifying the school. I will resubmit as soon as possible. I find the feedback in the responses to be very helpful.

My foot is much better. I was limping in pain a few days ago. The swelling seems to be very random. I will continue to get better.

I was at Subway today. I enjoy the meatball sub.

Past Paper On Database End Users

Remembering the paper I prepared on database skills needed by end users. One of my PC friends, Heather, responded to questions I prepared. Thank you Heather!

Music, Still Working On Papers

Today, I am remembering the Kenny G songs I listened to for hours in the dorm using that red cassette player. Here is one of my favorites:

Another Paper For Publishing

I submitted another article for publishing.

I am planning to submit the paper I prepared on improving e-commerce websites for the Research Design course. I like that paper. In the paper, I included user/usability testing of website designs in a lab, much like the testing I assisted with at USPTO.

The professor was tough. I also did not have the textbook (due to financial constraints). I recall that one of the assignments required completion of exercises in the textbook. I actually visited the library at the University of Florida (UF) to get hold of the book. I got an older version of the textbook that sufficed. Then, I was able to start work on the assignment. (Here is the blog post on the assignment: http://moorefo1ncuresearchdesign.blogspot.com/2016/11/waiting-for-book-for-assignment.html

The library I visited was in the medical building/section on campus. I took the bus there. I rode that bus a lot.

The blog for the course is available at: http://moorefo1ncuresearchdesign.blogspot.com/

I now specialize in usability studies and tests. I am seeking a Usability/UX Researcher position. View my design/usability experience at: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/fahmeenamoore_2015calendarimagesfahmeenaodettamoore-activity-6949154430164365312-KcKX

Journal submissions

I understand that it is normal for academic journals to reject papers submitted for publishing. I may need to submit a paper to 7 or 8 journals before it is accepted.

I guess the journal selection is important. I am currently researching the journals out there - there are a lot of them.

Next Paper

I am about to select the next paper to work on for publishing. I am not sure which paper I should select. There is the literature review that focused on online reviews. I was told the paper is too long. I still want to publish my decision-making framework though. There is also the paper I prepared for the same course that compared three related journal articles (An Annotated Bibliography).

I prepared a paper that looked at the designs of five studies to learn from examples (I believe it was the Research Design course). That would be a good one too. The topic for that one was social media.

Then there are the statistics papers. I worked hard on the assignments which I thought were very good. I could write a paper on methodology.

I will look into the statistics papers I prepared when I was vacationing in Maryland (from Florida) years ago. Those papers were very good despite the issues I experienced. I recall going to Starbucks to use their internet because my mother did not have internet service (I even tried to use my sister's internet but she was going away on vacation). My mother helped me out a lot. She dropped me off at the Starbucks everyday and picked me up when she was on her way home from work. I also had issues acquiring the statistical software for the course.

Organizational Structure Paper

I made a lot of progress on the organizational structure paper. I decided to include two examples of how companies are structured to compare to the theory. The findings are interesting. I think the paper will be accepted for publishing.

Still Working On Paper For Publishing

After reviewing one of my old blogs, I now understand why I selected the three articles included in the paper mentioned yesterday.  In the paper prepared the previous week (during the course), I noticed that the selected company - Google - was known for:

 "an innovation-oriented and change-prone top management and board;
an innovation-oriented and change-prone culture;
competent and committed individuals with a passion to innovate;
leaders that empower, coach and remove obstacles for innovation;
a semi-structured and ambidextrous organisation;
innovation-oriented performance and incentive systems;
continuous learning; and open innovation."
(From Steiber and Alange (2013))

I selected papers that included innovation and ambidextrous-ness.
Maybe I should include the Google example in the paper I am editing.

I read the descriptions expressing all the difficulties I was experiencing.
In the post on 09/10/2018 (https://fmoorephdbus7110.blogspot.com/2018/09/paper-finally-submittedreceived.html), I wrote:
"I like the course. I am learning a lot But everything feels rushed & I feel pressured all the time. This is because of the resource constraints I am dealing with right now (issues with my laptop - need to use library resources, need to read an entire book for the assignment, and so on). I hope it gets better. I am working on solutions."

I was reading the books and articles on the go.
The post on 09/12/2018 (https://fmoorephdbus7110.blogspot.com/2018/09/week-4-assignmentjournal-articles.html), shows that I checked out the book on Organization Behavior from the library. I read that book hurriedly and was not able to sit comfortably to read it. The included Facebook post shows me holding the book (with my face).

In the post on 09/14/2018 (https://fmoorephdbus7110.blogspot.com/2018/09/reading-articles.html),
the notes I scribbled on the printout of one of the journal articles is shown.

I guess I can handle a lot.

Preparing Papers While In New York

The situation in New York was overwhelming, maybe more than the average person can handle. I managed to hold it together (stay sane), get to the library, research papers, write papers, and submit. For example, the post "This is a challenging week, but I will try to get my work done. I need to hold on to the reins....while I try to steady/calm the storm around me."
- https://fmoorephdbus7110.blogspot.com/2018/09/work-continues.html
reminded me of my situation then. The entire course blog is a record of what a stranded PhD student can achieve.

The papers turned out pretty well. I received very good grades. I thought of publishing a few, especially the paper that required theoretical analysis for a "hypothetical" published article.

The library was very helpful. I remember walking the aisles looking for books/resources for my papers. I even asked a librarian to pull old resources that were stored in a separate section of the library.

Of course, my background was also useful, maybe more than I realize. For example, I have a background in public management that was very useful for several assignments that dealt with management theories. Example:
Paper/Presentation:
Three Theories Compared
(Analysis of transactional and transformational leadership)

I needed to analyze marketing theories for the week 6 assignment. I didn't have much experience analyzing marketing theories - my review of online reviews does not focus on the marketing aspects. Also, years ago in undergrad, when I had to choose between marketing and computer studies, I chose to take the computer studies courses. I ended up selecting marketing theories that intersected with areas in my background. I used a tea business example, which was based on my research into a tea business.
Here is the paper: https://fahmeenaodetta1.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/moorefbus7110-6_final.docx
(one of the few saved in my Wordpress account)
