Sub-ing

In the previous post, I mentioned that two of my relatives were teachers when they participated in mass games. I grew up around a lot of teachers. My other aunt (Auntie Gloria) is a teacher. My mother was a teacher too.

Did you know that I worked as a Substitute Teacher for Alachua County (which includes Gainesville) in Florida? I worked for the County for a little less than a full school term.

I liked being a Sub. The schools and students were quite good. I even liked the information system set up by the County for subs to select assignments. I recall that the system displayed the openings at each school. I selected the openings/jobs that interest (and worked) for me. Many times, other subs beat me to the good/choice assignments. A few times, school representatives called me for a required assignment. I believe those were cases where the school did not anticipate the need for a sub that day (they did not receive much notice).

Changes due to the Internet

Gone are the days

When students like me struggled to obtain details on countries, history, and so on for assignments

The Voici Paris assignment for my French high school class is an example

I needed details on the important places in Paris for the assignment

I had much difficulty finding the needed material

I did a lot to obtain what I needed - I went to library, asked my parents for assistance

My parents came through

I managed to prepare an adequate assignment

These days

There is the internet with websites such as the Google search website

A simple search such as 'Paris experience' provides lots of information for assignments such as Voici Paris

The user is connected with way more than needed

There is information on French hotels, flights to France, reviews by tourists, French culture and I could go on and on

It can be viewed as an information overload.

I recall that someone asked me for assistance with an information technology (IT) project on how technology changed (or is changing) the society five years ago.

A-Level Teacher

This is an idea for the future. My experience as a Substitute Teacher in Florida will be useful after all. I assisted with teaching at high schools (and other schools/levels too).
